75th Annual Labor Day Regatta
September 1st - 3rd
Sarasota Sailing Squadron will host the 75th Annual Labor Day Regatta September 2-3rd. The signature event for the SSS, the regatta draws hundreds of competitive sailors from across the U.S. and Canada.
The regatta attracts sailors ages 8 to 80 and is open to all classes of sailing vessels. A large number of participants are junior sailors 8-18.
Activities include a Friday night welcome party, five separate race courses, Saturday dinner and Sunday awards ceremony.

Music on Main Lakewood Ranch
September 1st | 6 pm - 9 pm
Join us on Lakewood Ranch Main Street from 6 – 9 pm for Music on Main, a free concert series and block party for the public!
The street is lined with food vendors, beer trucks, and sponsor booths, as well as rides and activities for the kids. Proceeds from the event will benefit a local non-profit organization each event.

Van Wezel's Friday Fest
September 22nd | 5 pm - 9 pm
This Friday Fest will feature TEN-76, a powerhouse high energy band that covers classic and modern rock. From the Lakewood Ranch home base, TEN-76 regularly plays many of the local venues and are expanding in the Southeast Region. They have volunteered their time and entertainment for charities (ex. Breast Cancer, Fire Victims, Veterans, First Responders, and Children in need) to help raise funds and awareness. Free admission. Bring blankets or lawn chairs, take in the music and the sunset, and enjoy food and beverage from local vendors.

2023 - 2024 Season
The Sarasota Ballet’s 2023 – 2024 Season will feature 7 programs showcasing the internationally recognized artistry and programming of the Company. New repertoire works for the The Sarasota Ballet include a new ballet by Jessica Lang, Edwaard Liang’s The Art of War, and a world premiere by Gemma Bond. Resident Choreographer Ricardo Graziano returns with some of his most acclaimed works and a world premiere, which will be his 11th one act ballet for the Company. Renowned as the ‘Father’ of Ballet in America, George Balanchine, is showcased through Theme and Variations, Who Cares?, and Emeralds from his masterpiece, Jewels. Mentor and a significant source of inspiration to Webb and Assistant Director Margaret Barbieri, Sir Frederick Ashton, comes to life with both humor (Varii Capricci), drama (Dante Sonata), and swiftness (Sinfonietta). And Webb continues to bring back beloved works by Johan Kobborg (Salute), Sir Kenneth MacMillan (Las Hermanas), Paul Taylor (Company B), Twyla Tharp (In the Upper Room), and Christopher Weeldon (The American).

Nancy’s Bar-B-Q Has Opened in the Rosemary District (SarasotaMagazine.com)
Owner Nancy Krohngold says she’s thrilled to be back downtown.
The beloved barbecue restaurant Nancy’s Bar-B-Q opened in the Rosemary District today. Owner Nancy Krohngold opened her original restaurant in 2010 in downtown Sarasota; it closed in October 2020. Krohngold then turned her full focus to running her popular Lakewood Ranch location, which also ceased business operations earlier this summer after lease negotiations could not be reached.
Nancy’s return to downtown Sarasota has been reminiscent of the early years prior to opening a brick-and-mortar. Back then, Krohngold served “stealth barbecue” by popping up in empty parking lots at a moment’s notice with heaps of barbecue for hungry fans who queued in long lines.
“My friends wanted me to make my barbecue for them. I was inspired by a New York Times article and taught myself how to make it,” Krohngold recalls. “The business grew into a fun side thing for me to do on the down-low in my backyard. I was a self-employed graphic designer and when 2007 came along, I didn’t have enough work. I thought, ‘You know, this pork—people are buying it. It’s reasonably priced and hard to find pork like this just anywhere.’”

Kolucan Will Open in Gulf Gate on Aug. 31 (SarasotaMagazine.com)
Chefs Gino Calleja and Jose Rojas will prepare upscale Mexican cuisine at the new restaurant.
Gulf Gate will soon welcome a new addition to the neighborhood. Kolucan Bar & Grill, owned by Gino Calleja of Reyna’s Taqueria and his business partner Jose Rojas, will open on Thursday, Aug. 31.
The restaurant will feature elevated Mexican cuisine and promises to bring a fresh perspective to the local culinary scene.
In a press release, Calleja, who grew up in San Lucas Colucán, Mexico, said, “Every time I visit home, I have to make the stop at San Lucas Colucán. The sound of ‘Kolucan’ has always resonated with me, reminding me of my family and my roots, which will forever be an integral part of who I am.”
“Gino and I share a strong love for our native Mexican roots, and I admire his experience and success in the restaurant business,” said Rojas. “Together, we are proud to introduce modern-day authentic Mexican cuisine to Sarasota.”
Kolucan will begin serving dinner at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31, with plans to expand to lunch and dinner in the near future. The restaurant is located at 6644 Gateway Ave., Sarasota. SarasotaMagazine.com
